Staying Occupied

I am somewhere near 39 weeks pregnant. I have been having false labor for nearly 8 days straight.
I am not one to complain about pregnancy, and I will gladly wait til my time is done, but false labor is really unfair on an uncomfortably chubby woman with insomnia. Because of my current situation, I am doing anything and everything to keep my mind off the fact that I am still pregnant. Today was preschool field trip day to the library, so I over did my make up, and matched up all my accessories. I took walks through the neighborhood, and went to the local bakery. I made Toma take blog pictures. All to help me feel a little.. distracted.

Even Margaux likes to accessorize, unfortunately she likes to do it with my belongings. My mustard gloves were missing for quite some time after our shoot, found them in a toy box.
I hope the next time I write to you dear readers I am writing as a non-pregnant woman... but that doesn't look very promising. A girl can dream right?

Frozen Toes

Last week, we had our 12 hours of snow. Every year we get to enjoy an extremely brief blast of a 1/2" of snow. This year it happened in the middle of the night and was gone by morning. Toma and I looked outside and had an insane idea to take some maternity pictures in the dark. I am glad we did, because it was all slush by morning, but I have no idea why I thought a 40s satin nightgown with no shoes was a good idea??

In case you are wondering, yes I am still pregnant. I was about 38 weeks in these pictures. It seems that this baby will make it to February. I guess time will tell.

Hair Party Parties

I am a broke blogger. Luckily, I have broke friends who are also licensed cosmetologists. My lovely friend Cara Mia, happens to make house calls to keep my ruby locks as lusciously red as they usually are. This time around we set up a hair party at my place and invited over friends. There were mimosas flowing, nachos being eaten, and even a boy or two floating around the house. One brave client even cut off 12 inches of her brunette hair to donate to Locks For Love, followed by a drastic turn for a new shade of purple!

I can't even imagine getting my hair done at a salon anymore, it's much more fun to dance to music, eat chips and party with your girls while getting your hair done. I am glad I have such awesome friends who are also very talented!

Taking Showers

This weekend my beloved boss threw me a quite unexpected baby shower. It was amazing fun with lots of good friends and family. I got plenty of goodies to prepare us for the (very soon) arrival of baby Olive. My boss's house is like an antique mall, which makes sense because she owns one. It was such a beautiful setting to spend a lovely evening with all of my friends! I am so thankful to be truly blessed with amazing people.

My mother even got me a vintage 1940s Pram buggy stroller, so this baby will take to the streets in severe vintage style! I can't wait to meet this baby, only 18-ish more days until my due date. I got my home birth tub all set up and ready to go.

The teal dress I am wearing is not maternity, and is actually just one of my favorite 1950s Jonathan Logan dresses... and yes I had to cram myself into it...

Under-dressed

I went out shopping with Solanah yesterday to procure some goods for my etsy shop, as well as my closet. It was a bright sunny morning, so I put on the most logical outfit, a sundress. Never mind that is January, and was only about 40 degrees F. Needless to say I froze my pregnant derrière right off! But at least I looked bright and sunny doing it?

The 50s alligator shoes are my newest fashion addition, a Christmas gift from my boss! They fit like a glove and I love the baby doll style to them! My dress is a vintage repro brand called Ruby Rox, and my sweater, is my infamous mustard sweater I live in every single day.

Resolving not to resolve

I cried on New Years. Not because I was sad, or worried, or intoxicated. I cried because I had such an amazing night, and a severely awakening moment of pure clarity. I spent the evening with amazing friends and a wonderful man. I ate and was merry, then stopped at a photobooth to top my early evening off. When I came home and laid in bed at the early hour of 10:30 pm, I smiled widely and knew, I had nothing to resolve this year.

Not that I think resolutions mean anything anyway. People seldom keep them and they are usually quite in vain. This year, I chose to not be a part of it. This year I chose to be thankful, blissful, and just down right happy. I have no fear of not keeping goals to cuss less, lose weight, save money, or whatever people resolve to do. I will simply count each and every blessing in my life.

I have amazing children. One more of them on the way. I can't afford anymore kids, but we make do with what we have, and we have a beautiful life. We have love, and art, and music, and dancing, and delicious food. If that was all I had, it would be enough.

I have a (CUSS WORD COMING CLOSE YOU EYES IF YOU'RE SCARED) fucking magnificent man. He is there to care for me, the kids, the house, and my mood swings. He shows me nothing but unconditional love every hour of the day. I wake up every single day knowing I am with the one person in the world who is truly meant for me. I have never felt love like this in my life, and I am surely thankful I have it now.

I have great friends. I know we all have good friends and this one is simple, but I love my friends. I never have to worry about counting on anyone, they are always there in my hour of need, and my hours of celebration.

I have a really fun blog with great interactive readers. I am gainfully self employed selling my favorite thing in the world. I know when I started this I had no job and I still don't really have any tangible life skills, so I invented a job doing what I love. In the past 3 years it has grown immensely and I am actually feeling like I am a business owner, not just a yard seller. I feel super proud of that.

I have a roof over my head, great family, and endless possibilities for my future. I love my life.

So then, that is all I have to say on New Years, and resolutions, and cussing on my blog.

Go forth, count your blessings, and for pete's sake...

Eat. Drink. And be frickin' Merry.

(yes, I might have cried writing this post. don't judge me, I am pregnant and therefore hormonal.)

three outfits later

Everyone is doing their christmas recap posts this week, so I will keep mine short and simple and filled with pictures of my outfit changes. My hair wouldn't work with me, so it changed 3 times. My shoes didn't match my epic christmas present, so those had to change too...

So onto several different things that all happened in one Merry Christmas day. (Oh, and lots of clip on ties too!)

In this post I got to wear not one, but two pairs of Bordello's by Pleaser! The red and white lovelies were my gift this year from Toma, and the leopard platforms were last years present! I hope to continue to get more bordello's each year for the holidays, my collection is growing rapidly!

A note about the amazing mustard coat with dyed rabbit fur at the very end. I wanted that coat more than anything, and threw a fit when I wasnt home to make a final bid on ebay. I even emailed the seller asking if the bidder fell through to let me know so I could buy it! Turns out the bidder was my mother, and she had this for my Christmas gift all along. Anyone who knows my mother, knows she can't ever trick me or pull things like this off. This year she did. I love this coat so much!

Friday Frocks - December

This friday I am showcasing some of my favorites out of my most recent shoot for Twila Jean Vintage. Hands down I think the lovely red rayon crepe number is winner in super 1940s style. The details and rhinestones are amazing, and it comes in a larger size!

I am also putting quite a few things into the Clearance Section of my shop, many marked down more that 40%.

(HAHA! you will take note at my "right to left" mistake. This is what I get for blogging at midnight... forgive me friends!)

Some of the dresses are already in the shop, the rest will be by Christmas. No rest for the wicked people, work all the time! Hope you all have a lovely holiday if you celebrate one, and if not, I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Seasons Greetings

Obligatory holiday post here. We decked our tree this year in a lovely mix of red and turquoise. These are my two most favorite colors, and since then I have added quite a few presents wrapped to match the tree. I bought several vintage shinny brights off etsy this year to fill in my tree! I love old glass ornaments. Sadly I didnt get to have my aluminum tree, as it sold from my work before I could afford it. It must not have been meant to be. So here is our tree and family picture. Take note at how cheery the men look...

How to dye ALL the things!

I have been binge-crafting lately, and my current spastic project is dying lingerie with good old fashioned RIT DYE. I have been posting about it on facebook for the past few weeks, and have had several questions about it. I agreed to write out a basic step-by-step tutorial on how to correctly dye your things.

You are going to need:

A large pot

A super awesome color of RIT Dye in a box. (I use the powder dye)

Some Salt

White/light colored things you want to dye.

A large spoon you can happily stain.

1. Fill your big giant pot full of water, and dump about 1/3 cup of salt in it. Bring that bad baby to a boil! When that water is boiling good and hard, dump your color packet (or colors if you are blending.) into the pot.

2. Get your fabric items a little wet before placing them into the boiling dye bath. I can usually fit about 2 slips, 2 bras, some gloves and a few pairs of underwear in each pot. You can add less if you prefer, and its best to practice on something that is not very valuable to you.

3. Stir like crazy. Set a timer for about 25 minutes, and stir your witches brew often. I tend to give a good swirl and re-arrange everything in the pot every 5 minutes, this will ensure EVEN color. You want even color, I promise.

4. Beware of boil over! I have to blow on mine a lot. You could just turn the heat down a little, but really, who wants to be responsible? Not I!

5. When your timer goes off, transfer the pot to your bathtub. Start by running warm water over the pot, draining it out every so often. Gradually turn the water colder, and colder until you are rinsing in the coldest water possible. Rinse until the water turns clear.

6. Squeeze the excess water out of the items, and either lay flat to dry or cheat and use your dryer. I like to use my dryer, I am very lazy.

7. Admire your amazing pieces of dyed goodness.

So far my favorite colors have been the Fuchsia pink, and the Purple (I mixed about 1 Tablespoon of red into it, it made a lovely Plum!) I have dyed bras, blouses, underwear, girdles, slips, gloves, and even a purse.

Lunch Time!

This week I got invited on a grown-up, ladies only, lunch date! I don't have much free time after working two jobs and raising two kids, so this was amazing for me. Solanah was there with our friend Lulu of Camera Bandit Photography. Solanah's vintage selling employer, Julie was there too! Yes, you know her from Fab Gabs Vintage. It was a 5 star luncheon, with 5 star company and I am so happy to have such a wonderful group of friends in my town.

The blouse I am wearing is the result of my recent garment dying obsession, which I will follow up on tomorrow! I have packed together a simple photo tutorial on how to successfully dye ALL THE THINGS! See you tomorrow.

Opening Night

I know it seems like the only thing I do in life is be pregnant and go to Astoria, but we were back at it again last weekend. Toma had an art opening at the RiverSea Gallery in Astoria so we had a mini getaway over night. We got to meet and greet lots of art lovers and even sold a few pieces! I am hoping that he is able to sell some more pieces as the month goes on.

It was nice to get away and I even took a day off work! But now I am back at it, working hard for the money. . .

I have not really been updating outfit posts because, I am not really feeling all that inspiring these days. I wear the same 4 dresses over, and over, and over again. This is the first time I have brought this little 50s tent dress out of the closet though, so I felt it might be blog worthy. I bought it over the summer from HenHouse Vintage when I first found out I was pregnant, but it just now seems to fit my ever growing belly.

I am working on getting myself out of the funk of pregnancy, but its hard when all you want to do is wear your old clothes, and not look like you are the size of a tug boat. I keep counting down the days, I am sitting right at 2 months left... I can make it, right? Right???

Art for sale?

As many of you know, Toma (the boyfriend) does some magnificent edwardian era style paintings that he sells on Etsy (tomaelias.etsy.com). We have gone one step further on his art work, and turned his original paintings into tiny keepsakes. I am so excited on this project, and I know I might be a little biased, but I have seen these in real life and they are pretty neat. He has made Brooches, Bracelets, Necklaces and Lockets, all with either the male or female painting. We finally got them up on etsy this week, so I thought I would share with you guys.

The top image is the originals, that he is saving for a gallery show in Astoria next month. But the jewels are all available and ready to ship in time for Christmas.

I don't celebrate

In the US, we have a little holiday called "Thanksgiving" in which we gorge ourselves on food, watch football, and then go shopping in the middle of the night for 1/2 priced socks. Ok, I am exaggerating, but really, that is what I remember of this holiday as a child. As an adult I have made the concious decision to never take part in this holiday again. I just... don't do it. I do however, throw Thankschreaster parties for my friends, and I also hit the primary school up for some TINY PIES.
If you don't have 5-12 year old children, or don't live stateside, you probably don't understand the glorious glory of the tiny pie. But I can assure you, there is no greater pleasure in life than sitting with a bunch of kindergarteners consuming the worlds smallest pumpkin pie with a giant dollop of whipped cream on top.

My actual thanksgiving day, was spent watching movies in bed with my love. and then eating homemade Tortilla Soup by the fire. I would never want to spend it any other way!

I don't really do holidays, and I don't really have a lot of family. But I do have a lot of friends, and I do really love to host a dinner. So I created a Holiday... a high class conglomerate of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. I packed it all into one night full of my favorite people, tons of food, and endless wine. I am a firm believer in building your own family, one made of all of your favorite people! Holidays need not be stressful nightmares of distant relatives, they do need to be fun and uplifting! ThanksChrEaster was all of those things. Can't wait til next year.

So I have decided to pre-label all of my baby related blather with the title "Mama Mia!" So for my very first entry related to no-vintage, baby only type things.. I thought I would share my Cloth Diapers thus far. This will be the third child I have swaddled in the cloth, and I would never choose any other way. I am a sucker for cute diapers, though sadly I got rid of most of them after Margaux potty trained, so I am on the long road of buying enough before this baby is born. I really sometimes think I only cloth diaper because of how cute they are, but really I love the earth, my child's health, and saving money... but holy heck, look how cute they are!

Obviously I hope to have way more by the time, girl-child-minus-a-name is born, but that is a pretty cute start for her.

Bird is the Word

I am not sure if I have actually featured my current favorite dress yet, so this is my Official Endorsed Bird Swirl Wrap Dress Post. I am actually not the owner of this amazing swirl wrap dress, it belongs to Solanah, who got it originally from her aunt, Amy of Team Jessup (who is featured below.) I can not even look in the general direction of most items in my closet due to my now 34" waistline, so I have been living in swirls. In this post I am wearing it on a recent trip to Astoria to stay with Team Jessup. I really do have some of the most amazing friends, and I am so thankful for each one of them!

I really love that picture of Toma and Joshua, do they not look like they are about to mug someone? I hang out with scary people. HA!

Palmer Wirfs Antique Expo

Friday marked "early entry" day to my favorite event held three times a year, The Palmer Wirfs Antique Expo. Of course, my partner in crime Solanah was with me as we strolled up and down aisle after aisle of vintage, antiques, and a little bit of junk. If you recall last expo Solanah and I sewed up matching twin outfits. This season we took it to a whole new creep level and went as twinsie nurses. I can't tell you how much I never want to hear someone say to me, "OHH nurse I am feeling faint," ever again. Lesson learned.

Oh also, like true princess, nurse, whatever-we-ares, we made Toma escort us in his valiant chariot.

I scored lots of awesome vintage pieces, including an early 40s bikini, an evening gown to die for, and the best teal christmas cocktail dress you can imagine!

And yes, my red cross uniform will be in the shop soon enough. . .

Patched

In my family, the pumpkin patch trip greatly surpasses most other things, including Christmas, in importance. Never has there been a year where we missed it, and I hope there never will be. This year was a gamble because we were out of town on a vintage buying trip in the middle of eastern Oregon. Thank goodness google directed us to a fantastic little family farm on our way back home called DD Ranch in Terrebonne, OR. They had ponies to ride (we did,) Delicious food made from their own cattle and farm (we ate,) and the best play area and kid maze I have ever seen (we got lost.)

I brought home 8 pumpkins, and am slowly going through the chop, cook, pureé process so that I can have endless pumpkin cakes and breads this winter! Basically, in case you were wondering, my whole life revolves around food.

Nearly everything I am wearing was gifted from Solanah, except my orange fishnets. She is so sweet always donating to the Twila Jean pregnant charity. HA!

Lunar Art

This month marked the opening of Toma's art showing at Lunar Boy Gallery in Astoria, OR. They have a special opening night, which we attended alongside Team Jessup. Amy of the Jessup party suggested we dress up a little spooky, as the show bore the title "Day of the Dead." It was a lovely night on the town, getting strange stares, and spooky compliments.

Knit A Long Pt. 2

I wanted to show you all a quick update from my 3 hour sweater knit-a-long. I have added Miss Cedar from the Vintage Wife to our party, as well as Relynn from Stumbling Through Life. Cedar is rocking the mustard colored yarn just like me, but she has a cute little baby to pose with her progress.

I am about 5 hours in so far, the back is complete, and the front is ... getting there. Relynn is knitting top down in the round with a modification she found here on this blog.

Bleu for You

Today, our local bakery finally re-opened under new ownership. I met Solanah, Coedith and her whole family to test drive the new baked goods. They revealed themselves at Bleu Door Bakery, and offer french style breads and pastries. It was tasty, but I am a sucker for fresh baked treats, and small local business, so it goes without saying that I am going to be a fan.

Cleaning House...

You may have noticed a mess around here, as I re-arranged widgets, and tested out html coding. I think most of the painful parts are over, and what I would like to share with you all is the new(est) look for my blog, and go over the name changes taking place!

First, if you haven't noticed... this blog is now pleasantly parked at www.twilajean.com! This is very exciting for me, as I go forth on creating a singular "brand" if you will. Etsy announced this week that soon enough, shops will have the ability to change names without effecting their feedback, so my shop too shall be dubbed Twila Jean Vintage!

I will still always be the metropolitan ex-housewife at heart, but some shedding is needed for me to continue to grow. My facebook page will stay the same and I will still be the metro housewife on there.

Anyways, just thought I would take a minute to explain what was going on over here, and hope you like the changes as much as I do. Thank you to all of my awesome readers who have gotten me to this point. I couldn't and wouldn't do it without you!

Expansive Waistlines

On my way to work, but here is a quick photo post of my outfit. Its getting very awkward to find clothing I can wear right now. I am too big for most of my normal clothes, and too small for all of my maternity. Thank goodness Solanah loaned me a swirl or two, only with I had more, those are the only things that fit me right now.

I want to condense all of my names, as you might have noticed I have several. Knit-a-long

I have found myself once again working on the infamous "3 Hour Sweater." There was a sale at the local craft store on mustard yellow yarn, so obviously I had to get it and find a project. What I love about this sweater is that it is easy, even someone who can't knit (i.e. ME) can make up this sweater. I have mentioned on my facebook page that it might be kind of entertaining to do a knit-a-long of sorts with this sweater, as it is a fairly quick knit, and we can keep each other motivated. Now, who knows if anyone will knit with me, but here is what I have done so far, with about 1.5 hours of half-arsed knitting:

I am using a medium weigh basic acrylic yarn (I am allergic to wool). My modifications to the needle sizes offered in the pattern are as follows:
Size 8 US needles for Ribbing
Size 11 US needles for body and yoke.
I used these needles lasst time and it knitted up rather nicely, though I only ever half sewed it together and scraped it in the end because I didn't like the color I used.

There is a lot of good info and modifications that can be found on the sweater here at the craftser.org forum, and ravelry has lots of pictures of finished products.
So why not give it a go? You can email images to me if you want me to post them with the updates on this sweater. I will credit you for your hard knitted work, of course!

VLOG: Victory Rolls Tutorial

It has been asked, and asked, and then asked again... So I have finally filmed up a basic "how-to victory rolls" video for you all. Sorry as I am sure its a little scatter brained and I have a hard time articulating. But V rolls are very simple, and just need some practice. So, watch the video and then do these over, and over and over again!

Two Wheels

Today I rode my bicycle everywhere I went today. In fact, I have been doing this a lot lately. But not because I am like a super hippie that wants to save the earth with my own sweat and tears... more because my car died three weeks ago and I can't afford to fix it. It has given me a greater appreciation and joy in life (on sunny days) to slow down and see my downtown around me.

The dress I am wearing was a "save the vintage" halloween buy at the Goodwill, its a weird 60s can-can style square dancing dress I think? I like the cross over peek-a-boo skirt anyway, very scandalous!
My boots are ghetto $12 clearance boots from Target, and the tights are from the one and only SOCK DREAMS!

I went vintage shopping after dropping the kids off and scored scads of goodies, of which I had to ride back home in my basket, uphill, pregnant.... I was quite worn out when I finally approached my alley.

Ruby Reds

I went out on a halloween-vintage-salvage hunt with Solanah last week. If you are unfamiliar with this practice, I will fill you in. It basically means you drive to every thrift store in a 30 mile radius during the months of September and October to save vintage that has been put on the "halloween racks" as costumes. Nothing gives me more fear than a teenage girl ripping up a 50s frock and covering it with fake blood to be a zombie mad men character. Save the vintage people!

Well, I didnt save much vintage this week, but I did land myself some amazing sparkle red ballet flats, and a matching red crinoline. I am a major, supreme, insane fan of the crinoline petticoat. I don't think a vintage wardrobe is complete without one. Plus, they look cute if you are daring enough to let a little show out the bottom of your skirt!

I find it funny sometimes, out of all the things I wear that I want to be authentic vintage or authentic reproduction, right down to my underwear... shoes are never one of them.

Season of the Witches

Much to my excitement, we have recruited Solanah for the hallowe'en series of images Toma has been working on as of late. We crammed the car full of brooms, buckets, and black hats and headed out to the edges of our town. We three drove around bickering over location, a fight in which Toma won when he threw a tantrum because he "NEEDED a Cornfield!"

Overall, I am glad Toma forcefully elected the corn stalks at sunset, as they made for some beautiful images. Very vintage feeling I think.But wait! There's more. You know you want to see the behind the scenes of this shoot, which is mostly narrated by me, as I never stop talking. We filmed as much as we could until the chupacabra started making scary noises in the corn in our direction...

The 80s Called

I finally bought some new autumn shoes the other night at target, a short "bootie" style that seems to be all the rage these days. Once I got them home and pair with a dress, I nearly wept in the shock that I appear to have fallen straight out of the 80s. This is on par with mortal sins to me... It doesn't help that I wore an 80s does 50s dress, to complete the look of, well, horror. Not my best effort.

Oh well, I suppose I can save them as "witch shoes" for dress up and photoshoots. I redeemed myself by purchasing an amazing pair of shoes at Goodwill the following day. Blog post on those super cuties come monday! See you then.

Light As A Feather

We have been working on a series of images for Toma's mother in a spooky hallowe'en vein. I am not sure exactly what these images will be used for, but they are a lot of fun to create. Here are some shots from our "levitation" shoot. I was happy to get the kids involved a little, even though they have an extremely hard time staying focused on the task at hand.

Even little margaux had a hand at floating. She is much better at this than I am, she must do pilates when I am not looking. My abs (read: baby) were KILLING me the day after this shoot.

Magically, we even sort of captured a family shot with the self timer. I am still amazed by this.

As promised, I have compiled a list of questions asked via email, facebook, twitter, and comments here. I hope to cover all your inquiries, though most of them stem from my tomato red hair.
Onward and upward dear friends!

Q: What Color do you use on your hair?
A: I only use professional colors. I use Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids in RED, which is one of the best on the market for staying power and vibrant color. It only works on treated hair though, so have your hair lightened a smidge and then deposit the Pravana. You should only get Pravana through a licensed cosmetologist.. but it is well worth the money. Don't go to Sally's and get manic panic, get the grown up hair dye, and look spectacular!

Q: How do you keep your hair so red? any tips?
For one, I only wash my hair every other day, sometimes two if I can manage it. That helps tremendously. Another good idea is to have a good shower cap on hand. Wash and condition your hair first thing in the shower, and make it as quick as possible. As soon as you are done, put the shower cap on to avoid anymore unwanted warm water causing the dye to bleed.
You might also try a red shampoo... but I don't know if mine have ever really helped. No matter what you have about 2 really good weeks of color, and then 1.5 weeks of "meh" haircolor. Then you dye, dye again!

Q: What type of product do you use on your pincurls?
I only wet set my hair with Lotta Body. If I use only wet hair, my curls fall out fast. Lotta Body, which is found at Sally Beauty Supply, is potent stuff that can make your curls with stand even the apocalypse... well, maybe not, but it works great.

Q: Can you post a Victory Rolls tutorial?
By George I can! Toma likes to spend money on things we probably don't need, like digital video cameras. So, looks like a video tutorial on Victory Rolls is on my agenda this month!

Q:How do you keep your bangs so tidy?
I think my bangs are my only obsessive compulsive trait. I trim them every few days, as they tend to grow unevenly. I keep them in a soft U shape when they are DRY. I always use a light spritz of hair spray to finish them and keep them in place.

Well now, I think that is it on my hair for the moment... Let's move on to something new.

Q: How do you hang your vintage clothing?
Honestly, this is gonna sound bad, but I am HARD on my vintage. Ok, not really, but in general I only keep things that are already damaged or made of cotton, so I dont worry about tearing them or messing them up. That being said, I use nice large velour hangers that are smooth and wide enough to support even a scoop neck dress on my nicer pieces. Cotton day frocks get the good ol' cheap plastic hanger. I never claimed I was fancy...

Q: how do you manage working, motherhood, and looking so put together?
Complete and utter vanity. All jokes aside, I feel like my appearance is one thing I have total control over. I could wear sweats to drop my kids off at school, with no make up on and untamed hair, but how would that help my self esteem. How would that portray to others how I feel about myself? I am an easily stressed out person, so I like to move slow. I wake up early, take a long time making breakfast, get myself prepped for the day, get the kiddos to school and make my way to work. It boils down to choice. You can look at your closet and choose jeans or a nice dress.
I can say with total conviction, its way easier to throw a nice dress.
Also, I just like to look like a princess.

Q: How did you get started dressing vintage and how to I integrate vintage things into my wardrobe?
I am not sure what started my love of vintage, other than hanging out at the local vintage shop and picking up simple cotton house dresses here and there. Once I had started, I nearly couldn't be stopped. I started reading blogs and old magazines to learn the ways of dressing authentically vintage. I feel so glamorous and fashionable even in the most simple day dress. I feel like wearing vintage and vintage inspired items has help boost my self confidence immensely.
To get yourself on that track I say, hit some local vintage stores if you have them, or shop on-line. Start with some staple pieces, a few dresses, a skirt or two and a good solid cardigan.
Remember that the cotton house dress is nearly and all season dress, pair it with warm tights and a sweater and you have a winter wardrobe!

Q: How do you know what to look for when shopping for vintage clothing?

Q:How did you meet Toma?
When this question was initially asked via twitter I spent several emotional hours reliving the first moments of Toma being in my life. I can say with almost 100% confidence that I know what it feels like to fall in love at first sight.
I met Toma at a mutual friend's wedding, where I accidentally sat next to him twice. Over dinner and wine we talked over everyone else at the table and lived in our own little world. I didn't see him again for a long time. Fast forward a lot of months, and we ended up working together on a few art projects and a fashion show.
I remember our first kiss, they tiny gifts he used to make me and package in film canisters, the tiny notes that read "you are perfect to me" tucked into my purse, and driving his broken car to my house early in the morning just to say good morning to me before he had to work. He even inadvertently bought me a wedding dress, maybe you guys will get to see it some day.
We have had a hard and messy start, but I wake up every morning incredibly thankful for the fact that the love of my life has been given to me. I have finally made it to a point in my life, where I regret nothing whatsoever. I am where I am supposed to be.
(Yes I am rambling because I am lost in thought, and yes I was crying when I wrote this part. Sue me.)

The Witchy Witchy Girl

I am sitting here cozy on my couch for the first time today, enjoying an after dinner glass of red wine. (Don't hate, I have read many articles and three different midwives have given me the green light on a libation after a meal here and there...) I never post on weekends, but I had Toma take a few pictures of my witchy outfit, and while lounging here trying to decompress after an insane day, I thought I would share those pictures.
I am not wearing a single vintage item in this picture, but I don't care. I was channeling my inner wicked witch of the West today, and she can wear modern clothes if she likes. Are my grey and black stockings not the bees knees? Best $2.00 I have ever spent at a Goodwill.

It's a Baby Centaur!

Sorry to everyone who reads my facebook page, but Art Deco Dame spilled the beans early and apparently I am going to be birthing a centaur.

Ok, ok, Toma and I are having a baby and not a mythical creature... Today was the find out stuff about the spawn in your belly day. We packed up the kids super early and headed to the city to get a scan done of my midsection. The place is called EPIC Imaging, so take note... it is epic.
They go ahead and squirt a bunch of goo on your belly and rub a magic wand all over you, and you see pictures of a skeletal childlike figure. Ours happens to have all of its fingers and toes, and a beating heart. I hear that is good.

WAIT! I forgot to talk about the more important item of the day, my outfit! I am wearing a fabulous 50s maternity suit Solanah kindly let me borrow. Underneath is a super cute white 50s blouse that Bombshell Bettie sent me, but it was way too cold to show off. Sorry Nicole!

I told you it was epic...

OH! I almost forgot to add, She is a 19 week old fetal-style baby girl. Can't believe I nearly left that part out *wink*

Southern Fried Birthday

Last Thursday was Toma's birthday party. He elected to eat meatloaf at a self proclaimed southern food cafe in Portland called the Delta. The food was pretty good, though I fancy myself a jambalaya master and can make it better blindfolded. The main point was Toma loved his meatloaf, and really that is all that mattered. We had to bring the kids, and we also brought Solanah, but because we love her, not because we had to. Solanah and I were supremely overdressed, as is our style, and Toma wore a black cowboy shirt which is his style.
I must say these are some of the best pictures I have had on my blog in a while. I want to frame all of them, and hang them in my house. I love my friends and family.

And... poor Solanah had to ride in the tiny back seat with the kids. She is a trooper though, and we are happy she made it.

A few other friends came too, but by then my 5 year old was taking pictures of people eating so I wont be sharing any of those. I can't wait for next year, I think top secret get-away is more in order for his birthday... one that includes meatloaf of course.

Shazam! Pasta Sauce!

I have grandiose ideas sometimes, and furthermore, I have those ideas on 90 degree days. This idea was the notion that I needed to make tomato sauce from scratch and then can it. Why wouldn't I do such a thing on one of the last hot days of the year? While I might say it was sweltering in my kitchen, it was also well worth it. I would do a smaller batch if I were you, as it only takes about a half hour and you can feed yourself some of the yummiest pasta sauce you have ever had, sans gross chemicals found in jar sauce.

The dress I am wearing is one I am borrowing from Solanah, by way of Amy from Team Jessup. Its a SWIRL, and its the cutest bird print I have ever seen!

There is no shortage of basic tomato sauce recipes on the internet, some bloggers even have some too, chuck full of reviews! Check some out and grabs some maters before the season is over. You wont regret it!

Word to the wise, not all things vintage are worth it... I canned and canned and cooked and cooked... 4 hours later I only had 3 jars of sauce. Don't make a huge batch and can it. Make a small batch and EAT IT!

Fluff Piece

In lieu of posting some more sobbery about how my hormones have made me crazier than an outhouse rat, I thought I would share with you my outfit from the other night.
Friday night was the opening of Toma's art showing at the Brickhouse. It is a very exciting time for him right now, within an hour of hanging he had already sold three original pieces! Anyway, I had originally bought this dress to sell, but it fit me well and makes me appear to have an hourglass figure despite being 18 weeks pregnant so I figure she's a winner.

My son, the 5 year old photog, decided he wanted a go at taking some snaps of Toma and I walking in the front. Honestly, they aren't bad for a kindergartener wielding a DSLR camera...

Baby Blues

Preserve It

As the cold weather slowly creeps upon us, assuring us fall is around the corner I find myself wondering what I will do with all the left over summer produce. Being pregnant I find myself wondering if I will ever eat enough pickle related edibles. Huzzah! Plan of action: CAN IT.
As an extremely co-dependent blogger, I can only do fun things such as pickling and jamming with a house full of people. So, I threw a Pickle Party (which I highly suggest you try,) to appease my cravings and neediness.
I enlisted our favorite bloggers Coedith, Solanah, Team Jessup, and Toma as well as a few other bright stars, er, I mean friends. We set forth on a decadent mission of mixed berry jam and dill pickles. (Recipes at bottom!)

Tip! Buy farm fresh whenever possible! The freshest fruits can the best.
Tip! check local thrift stores and yard sales, you can almost always find super cheap Jars, lids and other canning supplies and books on the CHEAP.

Tip! Make the men folk stand around looking tough to guard your jars of deliciousness!

Whats amazing, is you can can (HA!) almost anything that grows from the ground. My next mission is a yummy tomato sauce to use in pastas over the winter. So, there... Have you been inspired? If so, quickly invite all of your friends over. Get your hands on a Ball Canning Book, and get canning.

I used This lovely pickle recipe from the Ball Blue Book. We of course had it assembly line style with all sorts of extra ingredients to throw in each jar like hot peppers, onions, pepper corns, and lots of garlic.

Dill pickles (from Ball Blue Book of Preserving)
(Yield: about 7 pints or 3 quarts)

8 pounds 4-6 inch cucumbers, cut length-wise into halves
¾ cup sugar
½ cup canning salt
1 quart vinegar (white or cider vinegar, 5% acidity)
1 quart water
3 tablespoons mixed pickling spices
Green or dry dill (1 head per jar)

Wash cucumbers; drain. Combine sugar, salt, vinegar and water in a large saucepot. Tie spices in a spice bag; add spice bag to vinegar mixture; simmer 15 minutes. Pack cucumbers into hot jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace; put one head of dill in each jar. Ladle hot liquid over cucumbers, leaving ¼ inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Adjust two-piece caps. Price pints and quarts 15 minutes in a boiling water canner. (note: start counting from the minute jars hit the boiling water canner).

Recipe variation: For Kosher-style dill Pickles add 1 bay leaf, 1 clove garlic, 1 piece hot red pepper and ½ teaspoon mustard seed to each jar. Process in hot water bath as recommended.

The Jam was even easier than the pickles! Our local bakery owner, Claire is also a master freezer jam maker. With the help of Coedith's lovely daughters squishing hands we were squared away with a tasty treat.

Freezer Blueberry Jam
* 3 cups blueberries, rinsed well
* 5 1/4 cups granulated sugar
* 1 tablespoon lemon juice
* 1 package powdered pectin
* 3/4 cup water

Preparation:
Crush berries in a large bowl; add lemon juice. Stir in sugar and let stand for 10 minutes. In a saucepan, mix pectin and water; bring to a full boil. Boil, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Mix pectin mixture into fruit; stir for 3 minutes. Pour fruit mixture into freezer containers or small canning jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Cover immediately and let stand at room temperature for 24 hours. Store in the freezer.

There you have it... long story long, you now know how to make and can your own Pickles and Jam! Magic!

Super Serious Garden Tips with Twila

As a follow up to my last gardening tips, I thought I would present a slightly more sober, and practical series based around Companion Gardening. To be honest, I have no idea what companion gardening is, and I only learned of its name after a facebook comment was left on my page. In a nutshell, I believe, it is the act of starting your next sowing season under and around your current one to optimized PH balances and a bunch of other stuff I don't really understand. Don't worry! You don't have to understand either! Twila is here to help. Kind of.
I have some tomato plants on their way out, but still fruiting, so I have elected to plant my winter garden of spinach, carrots, and kale around them. Follow along dearies!

Find any old spot in between plants that you can. It doesn't have to be a large spot, as the seedlings start very small. In between my tomatoes I am going to plant some carrots!

Ok, OK! Before I hear anyone crying out from their computer desk, "WOE is me! I haven't a garden bed, I can not do these magical things!" THIS is what my garden looks like. (I.E. you can plant a garden anywhere.... in anything... Solanah even has one on her tiny balcony.)

Its best if you employ some child labor, and get them to water everything while you sit back and enjoy a cup of whatever beverage you like to drink... If I were not pregnant, obviously I would have a mimosa in hand.

Other good things you can plant in the end of summer/fall season are cabbage seeds and broccoli. Depending on where you live... yeah I am looking at you northern Cali... you have a successful garden all the way through winter!

I imagine if you are a follower of my Fan Page, you heard this news last week. If you however reside only on my blog space, then you do not know this current info. Before we get all excited and pull out our judgment sticks and start whacking away at our keyboards, let my preface this a little.
While our situation is not ideal, we are happy, the kids are happy, and though incredibly stressful, we shall make it through this alive.
So, have you guess yet? I am sure you have... (there is a thumbnail image to this post. this JUST occurred to me.)
Yeah, in true unplanned, unmarried, kinda ghetto style... I am expecting my third (and FINAL) child in February. The silver lining in all of this is that I have never once planned to have a child, so none of them can try to play the "I was the planned kid" card in their teenage years.

So now we make the preperations for a child. This is the worst part I think, I helped a friend in need last year, and gave her ever baby item I own. So, now I am re-building from scratch. I guess we will call this an adventure. One where I gain 20 lbs, and lose a lot of money! Ha!
You know what else is a bummer, the fact that I sold this amazing 40s cotton maternity dress, and try as I might, can not buy it back. How fabulous of a dress would that be to wear in the prenatal season?

So. It is out. Follow or unfollow as you see fit. I am thankful for all the gifts in my life and I wouldn't turn a single one away. Alright then, carry on with your weekend. Nothing to see here.

Starving Artists

Last week was Toma's first art walk in Portland. In stall 406 he was selling his paintings and prints on the side of the street like a gypsy pop-up-shop. As a diligent, micro-managing, let-me-do-it, kind of girlfriend, I was of course there to help set up and get things looking the way I wanted them.
It was about 85 degrees, and we were in direct sunlight. The beautiful glowing sun caused my make up to melt, and my false lashes to fall off, as seen in the image below. All in all, we handed out lots of business cards, sold lots of post cards, and even a few prints. I rather like the traveling tent shop experience and am quite excited for the next adventure!

The next shows are Olympia, WA and then Astoria, OR. We seem to be all over the place these days. We could also use your crossed fingers that we land a space at Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle this December. I am so excited for where are lives are leading us, and the children. Life is so very good, and so very full of possibility!

WANDA

In my mysterious world, I seldom have days off from work, and even less days off without my children. Some how through a serious of otherwise annoying and unfortunate events, I ended up with a Saturday free to do as I please. I know it might seem like the only place I ever venture to is Astoria, and really... I guess that is the only place I go, but I love it there. Toma and I got a very late start to the day and made the hour and a half trek to the Mouth of the Columbia, where Team Jessup also happened to be for the weekend! Before leaving Toma took some outfit shots of my very Wanda-from-Crybaby-esque attire. I find myself often channeling Traci Lords a la 90's rockabilly style. Toma often finds himself taking pictures that should probably not make the cut on the blog as seen by image number 2.

In Astoria we did the obligatory sight seeing that accompanies most trips to this location. Lunch at Fort George (YUM!) and Oogling at Vintage Hardware (Spectacular!)
If you ever roll through the streets of Astoria make sure to stop in at Vintage Hardware, which is located in a decaying turn of the century hotel. There are tons and tons and tons of old artifacts and what-not-ery for your hearth and home. Also, it serves for a very unique blog photo backdrop.

I am glad to have spent a lovely free day with Team Jessup and their beautiful Astoria home. And while we were in town we stopped by the Lunar Boy art gallery, where Toma submitted some of his current art. They liked it! It appears he has been offered a spot for a few pieces this coming October. Our life is so abundantly full of tiny blessings.

Fry Your Tomatoes

If you remember from posts prior, I have a small tomato garden brewing on my front stoop. What started as a tiny 6" plant, has magically grown in to a monstrous heap of greenery. The plant which once stood taller than me, has now toppled sideways, and is growing out across the front yard. There are about 30 green heirloom tomatoes on it, and that is not including the 4 other plants growing out front. Yes dear friends, I am about to be in a massive abundance of tomatoes.

What to do with the excess you might ask? Why fry them right up! On that note, I thought I would share my favorite recipe for...

Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients:
Firm Green Tomatoes
Salt and Pepper
1 Egg
Cornmeal
Cajun Seasoning (optional)
Olive Oil or Bacon Grease

Do This:
Slice the tomatoes into 1/4" slices, sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Mix cornmeal and cajun seasoning in shallow dish.
Beat egg, coat tomato slices in egg and then coat in cornmeal mixture.
Fry in pre-heated hot oil.
Cook about 3 mins per side, or until golden brown.

This is one of my favorite summer side dishes! If you have never tried a fried tomato, now is your chance. This is an excellent use of end of season tomatoes that just havent gotten to blush yet.

City Outings

All week we have been making the trek across the bridge and applicable state lines to patronize establishments in the Big City. Today we toted along the children, and splurged on pizza by the slice in a cafe that played the entire discography of the Murder City Devils. I wore a sundress, but here in the northwest, even in summer, we have no sun. Don't get me wrong, I feel for you guys out there with your record heat wave and horrid humidity. But the honest to God truth is, this is our third summer in a row with excess rains, cold weather, and dying crops. So I hate to say it... but take your sun and shove it. (I will add a " ;) " here so I don't lose too many followers.)

In reality the real reason we have been braving the endless bridge-lifts and rush hour traffic in the city is for Toma's art. We have lined up a bunch of outdoor shows, and hangings in local establishments over the next few months. In addition to his photography the man has moved on to some very amazing paintings inspired by early edwardian era lithography. We have been venturing across the river to Quick Stop Photo (which also has an online shop here) to get prints of the paintings made. Also, no matter where you live I fully endorse Quick Stop, they do such amazing work and ship world wide. I am so completely impressed with the quality of the prints we have received.

In all of my free time (HA!) I have taken over Toma's Etsy Shop as well, where you can pick up the above three, and several other prints from the series. If you want to keep this blogger clothed and housed, you should help us spread the word. Add him to your circle or favorites if you like his work. I assure you we appreciate it greatly.
Alright, enough blathering on about that. I am off to work on my own etsy shop, and hopefully finish listing this daunting pile of dresses...

The Gut

Every year in the city I live in, there is an amazing classic car cruise called "The Gut." It covers a one mile stretch of Downtown Vancouver and brings out masses of people and more importantly, their cars. Traffic moves at a snails pace up and down main street, with thousands of onlookers lining the street. I work on main street so when I got off work, I just walked out the door and into the action. I bought a dress of Solanah's out of my own booth to wear at the event. Its a cute 80s does 50s pink dress with black bows. I am in LOVE with it.

As it has been the past two years, this year was a major success, with tons of cars and even more people. I can't wait for next year and hope to see many more people out cruising the gut.

Endless Coastlines

If we remember correct, it would appear all festivities for my 25th birthday were canceled. Much to my surprise, Toma had other ideas entirely. Upon coming home from a doctors appointment, I found him and the children awaiting a drive to the Oregon Coast.
We spent the day and night in Seaside, OR but ate delicious food in Astoria. For those unaware, Astoria is my favorite town in the entire world (not that I have explored the entire world.. I am a little bias.) So we returned in the early morning to devour the most spectacular brekkie ever at Astoria Coffee House, of which I highly recommend flying from where ever you are to experience.
We played in the sand, saw aquatic animals in captivity, slept in a roadside motel, and ate like kings. It was a pretty good birthday after all.

On the subject of the above octopus, does anyone know for a fact if it lives in its tiny captive water cage at all times? It looked quite unhappy and claustrophobic in that prison. I kind of want to contact the Seaside aquarium to discuss further, not that I think it would do much good.

It's My Party

This year, in 5 days, I am going to be 25 years old. If you know anything about me, you know that birthdays are my favorite thing.. ever. I had grandiose plans of a spectacular quarter century party, but alas... unfortunate life events and severe bouts of depression have led me to cancel entirely. I think this will be the first year ever I do absolutely nothing to celebrate my birthday. I guess on the bright side this gives me a year to plan for the lesser important '26' shindig.

If you follow my facebook you know I was planning a birthday Prom for my party. I had a dress and all. A fabulous 50s party frock, fit for a birthday queen. Are you a birthday queen? Well then, have at my dress! It's here and ripe for the picking via my Etsy Shop!

Long Distances

Last week I, Toma, and both kids loaded up the car for a vintage thrift road trip through Oregon. I absolutely love vintage road trips, small town thrifting and antique malls are so exciting. We stopped at all of my favorite places like the Deschutes river, big canyons, mountain coffee shops, and ended in the desert at Toma's parents current locale. His parents place had a fun log cabin built for children that was too adorable.

We did lots of retro style sight seeing on the trip and stopped at one of my favorites Peterson Rock Gardens in Redmond, OR. If you ever find your self in the center of Oregon, the rock garden is a serious must-see. There are peacocks and horses, lakes and kittens. Also, plenty of rocks. Monuments hand crafted out of rocks.

Of course I bought a lot of vintage. A lot. I have plenty of things that will be wandering into the store this week if I get the time to actually list. I wish I could live on the road collecting vintage, but alas I am back home and back to blogging about my travels. Until next time dear friends...

Dumpster Diving 101

On my way to work the other morning I spotted a cute little dresser sitting next to the dumpster in my apartment alley. It had some potential, so we took it. I don't know that I would actually dig an item out of a dumpster, but I will take an awesome piece of furniture that is sitting next to a dumpster. . .
Today before work, we decided to work on the dresser. We are gonna sand it down and paint it red and put white milk glass pulls on it. I wore my new Freddies Of Pinewood "Dungaree Dolls" that were a gift from reader Lori! They fit so amazing and are super comfortable. Perfect for working very hard on sanding a dresser (and also, checking the status of the Tomato Plant!)

Ok, by working really hard, I mean Toma was working on sanding and cleaning and all of that. I just wore the overalls, but I looked as though I was a champion dresser sander!

At any rate, I love my new Freddies. I have a few other pairs of the regular dungarees, but the overalls are just too cute for words. I am so excited to have them in my wardrobe!

Also, when I (read: Toma) finishes the dress I will share update pictures of its adorableness.

Graduation Day

Today was my 5 year old son's preschool graduation! I tried to get my blog pictures in before hand so I didn't have to pose with tear filled eyes. I am wearing a fabulous new dress I just picked up at a local shop, with bright pink flowers all over it. I am on the fence about keeping it or selling it, I just can't seem to decide.

And now for a true inside look at how I obtain my blog pictures. I call this series: "Little Kids Who Won't Stay The Hell Out Of My Pictures." Follow the progression of children who don't seem to understand the term "please go stand over by Toma while he takes Mama's picture"
(Note: No children we actually harmed in the making of these images.)

After the agony of getting some outfit pictures, I took several hundred pictures at the graduation ceremony, cried a lot, and ate some cake. I am mind blown that a kindergartener belongs to me. I am so proud of that little squid! Oh dear, I am tearing up again...

Sweater Weather

It's June, in case you don't own a calendar... Here in Washington that means, it's still very cold and threatening to rain a little at any moment. Today I didn't mind because I got to wear my new 1930's sweater I got on the cheap from Solanah's work the Urban Eccentric. Its a little too *ahem* small for me, so I just tramp it up a little and leave the front unbuttoned.

The rest of my outfit is less exciting, just a plain red 40s skirt, and some jewelry bits. In case you are wondering, my closet is nearly 100% black, white, red, and teal(ish) colored items. I should really branch out a little...

The Waters Are Rising

Solanah and I went on a thrifting excursion last week, but in between shopping and driving we met up with Toma for lunch down on the waterfront. The rain here never seems to cease, so the waters are up to flood levels. The boardwalk had been closed for days, but when we were there the river had withdrawn some. Solanah got some fun shots of Toma and I wandering on the boardwalk near the wakes of the river.

My skirt is a 70s poly cowgirl skirt that I got from Solanah, and I am simply in love with it.
I bought Toma that white shirt, and forced him to wear it. I think a white shirt and a tie is a nice addition to his wardrobe. Now, if I could convince him that pink is an acceptable color for a man to wear....

Shoe Party Parties

I was invited to Cara Mia's Hoodoo Shoe Party. I am gonna be honest here, I have never heard of a shoe party, and to make matters worse it was advertised as a "shoe party/naked lady party." As you can imagine, I thought this party was going in a completely different direction, HA! I kid, I kid... if you haven't been to a naked lady party, it is where you get together with all your friends and bring a bag of clothes you no longer wear. Everyone throws the clothes into a pile, and then it is a civil deathmatch for other peoples clothes! Hopefully at the end of the night you leave with minimal bruising, and a few new outfits.
The Hoodoo Shoe party was hosted by Joy of Lucky Cupcake Hairclips (who hates getting her picture taken as you can see below...) And if you can believe this, at a party FULL of Bordello Shoes, I didnt buy a single pair. Mostly because I am a single mom (see also: BROKE) and the pair I wanted were on back order. But I had a great time and traded in for some new clothes!

While at the party, another party goer and photographer, showed me her newest toy: A homemade wide angle lens. It consists of putting a peep hole (from a front door) into a lens cap and attaching it to your regular lens. It was super fun to play with, and here is proof of the silly that went on that night...

I can't believe in all my excitement to post the pictures from the Witchery Shoot, I forgot to preface all those pictures with the blog post about how I chopped off all my hair.
Did you notice? be honest....

So, let's back up a day or two and go over a visual recap of where all my long red hair went.
The last time we added red to my hair, we had to weave in blond first, which really took a toll on my ends. My hair was dry and brittle and looking like junk. So, I called my friend Cara Mia over to help remedy the situation over a few mimosas. (Don't worry dears, she is licensed!)

A Witchy Woman

The darling and lovely Sandra of The Witchery Vintage was kind enough to gift me a fabulous dress for my up and coming birthday. I had been eyeballing this dress for some time, but when money got tight, I took it off reserve and gave up the hope of owning such a beautiful piece. I was amazingly surprised when I got her message that she would in fact be posting it to me!
Sandra has been a fairly long term sponsor of this here blog, and so I would just like to give her a huge shout out. If you haven't stopped in on the The Witchery Vintage lately you need to peruse, as she has gotten some fabulous 50's frocks in lately.
I promised Sandra I would snap some shots of the dress in action, so I spent a few days thinking up a plan and enlisted Toma to do my shooting. My plan was shot all to pieces when the camera battery died. Then our back up analog plan fell apart when we left the film at home. So the location changed a few times and its not my initial vision, but I share with you.... My trip to the market / walking across bridges / dangerous wall climbing: A Photographic Montage.

The dress is simple white cotton with black flowers all over it. Rhinestones are the bodice, and the cap sleeves hang just off the shoulders. I think I have found my new "go-to" dress for summer. Thank you Sandra!!!

Kingpin

I know it seems that the only thing I blog about anymore is going bowling, but to be truthful in the soggy northwest, there is not much else you can do indoors for entertainment. On that note, I had a great outing with blogging family Team Jessup, Toma and Solanah. My kids get bored easily with prolonged games of bowling, so they mostly just played in the arcade.

As you can see from the above evidence, I tend to fall at bowling allies and Team Jessup always looks adorable.. always. The foot picture is the only picture Solanah would allow me to
take of her that night.

(OK, on a side note, while re-reading through this, I noticed in both pictures of my children they look like crazed hungry wild beasts??!! HA! Products of mine no doubt..)

Twila on the Roof

Readers who are not following my Facebook page, might not know but I have taken on a third job, as well as raising my children. So my blog is feeling a little neglected, but I am trying to muster the energy to keep at the very least a weekly post.
This week, I thought I would share some pictures I created with Toma. This idea was really impromptu and I threw together my whole outfit and hair in about 10 minutes with what I had laying around the house. The dress was made by Solanah and its one of my favorite pieces I own.
We shot on the roof of a garage in the alleyway behind Toma's house (Shh! Don't tell the neighbors!) It was cold, I was barefoot, and the roof was rotten and highly unstable. But we managed to capture a few cool shots in the evening sun.

We only shot one roll, and it was over rather quickly but I am so happy that we managed to get this shot. Obviously, this one is my favorite. We printed it huge and its sitting the living room right now. It looks so cool, seriously... cool. (Is my ego super flattering or what?)

Twila Tips To Terrible Gardening

I thought I should do a special feature on something I find myself quite the expert in: gardening badly. If you have ever sought gardening tips, or help with planting your vegetables, you should probably just stop reading right now. But, if you like to waste a Sunday afternoon pretending you know anything about urban farming, read on my friend, read on...

I have broken down my master garden tactics into 4 simple steps. Lets begin shall we?

1. Start with the wrong tools! Don't have gloves or shovels, that is for serious pros... sissies.

2. Its also recommended to wear the worst possible shoes, and a white/light colored wiggle dress.

3. Step three is simple enough, get cranky when your man is photographing you, and get dirt EVERYWHERE. There is no rhyme or reason to the dirt part, just make sure you get it everywhere you can. (Tip! Don't forget to break off the lower leaves of the tomato plant and bury that sucker deep... this is a real tip, not a fake one. Trust me, I'm Twila Jean!)

4. Possibly the most important task of the afternoon is incredibly self explanatory.

I hope you have learned a thing or two about how to plant tomatoes, and I hope that by following these simple guidelines, you too will have an awesome harvest of veggies.
That being said, mine have only been in the ground for about 5 days... so this could all go horribly wrong. Good luck!

Gambling in a Desert

A week or so ago, I found my self boarding an airplane with my mum headed to Las Vegas. Sadly I didn't get to go for viva, instead I landed exactly one week before Viva Las Vegas 14. None the less, we had a warm weekend, filled with all things I assume you are to expect of Vegas... gambling, drinking, and swimming.
I have never been to Vegas, and I must say, I don't know if I would ever go back. (unless its for viva 15!) I am not much on gambling, though I did manage to win a little scratch on Fremont Street. Yes friends, I came home with more money than I left with, which I suppose is pretty good in a place where the odds are nearly always against you.

We stayed at the Tropicana, which has the smallest casino ever! I was shocked when we arrived, and I literally said out loud "This is a vegas casino?? why does it seem so much cooler on tv?" I am sure the staff loved me! Ha! We wandered on through all the other bigger casinos and my mind happy to know that there is a HUGE Vegas out there.
Not being a gambler I played $5.00 at a time, very slowly... and collected my free mimosas!

Well now, I fear this might be one of my most poorly written and rambley blogs. None the less, lets move on to some visual aids, a series of my outfits... I like to call it "outfits"

One amazing fabulous thing that happened whilst I was wandering the strip was stopping the Bettie Page store. The lovely girls behind the counter pointed me in the direction of Calo Style, Las Vegas's pink building filled with fantastic vintage clothing!
When I got to Calo I was greeted by fantastic ladies behind the counter. I was shocked and mind blown when one of the girls (That Vintage Broad) told me she is a follower of this blog!!!!!!!
At any rate, the store is wonderful, and filled with some fantastic vintage. The swim suit section is a MUST SEE!

And for good measure, a photo of me outside the Golden Nugget where I made my millions.. er... my $200 winning!

Leaving was surreal, it was goregous and 90 degrees when we were boarding the plane, and wandered back home to the the cold and rainy northwest. I enjoyed a crazy, fast paced, loud weekend... but like they say, There's no place like home.
I like to be here at home with all of my loves.

Build-Your-Own-Family Easter

I am just back to reality after possibly the most busy weekend I have ever had. I offered up my hostess-ness to our friends, and threw a wayward Easter. Mind you, I have a problem with throwing parties, I go WAY to far, and make way to much. By the time I had whispered the word "theme" I had a Greek-ish menu of Lamb, Dolmas, Cumin Carrots, Mashed Potatoes, Hummus and Pita, Cous Cous Salad, and two (yes two...) Cakes. I couldn't be more thankful for how smoothly and perfect everything thing turned out, mostly due to Toma and his insane ability to calm me the hell down... Also, the wine helped. Toma and I made dueling cakes, of which the title of Winner is still up for dispute, mostly because I refuse to lose.

A great many friends came to eat, the Easter bunny stopped in several times delivering a bounty of chocolate, elephants and squirt guns. Even Solanah popped in at the last minute, dressed as the Easter Princess. Egg Dye was spilled, Mini Mart runs were made for champagne, NERF gun wars we fought. It was quite honestly, the best holiday I have ever had. It was a rather perfect weekend, if you ask me anyway.

If you have ever had Dolmas from the store and liked them, I strongly advise making them from scratch at least once in your life. Its a lot of work, but if you have help it's easy and the taste is well worth it.
Here is what I loosely based my recipe off of:
Vegetarian Dolmades
Ingredients

1 1/2 cups long grain rice (such as Jasmine)
2 1/4 cups chopped green onions (about 14 onions)
2 cups chopped plum tomatoes (about 14 ounces)
3/4 cup chopped fresh dill
3/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon plus 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cumin
55 (or more) brined grape leaves from two 7- to 8-ounce jars, drained, stems cut off if needed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

PREP:
Combine rice, green onions, tomatoes, chopped dill, chopped mint, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, cumin, salt and pepper to taste in large bowl and toss. Let soak at room temperature at least 30 minutes.

Line bottom of large pot with 2 layers of grape leaves, covering bottom completely; set aside.

Open 1 grape leaf and lay flat, veined side down, on work surface (if leaf is small or broken, patch with 1 additional grape leaf). Place 1 tablespoon rice filling atop center of leaf. Fold stem end of leaf up over rice filling, then fold in sides of leaf over filling and roll up leaf tightly, enclosing filling completely. Place on baking sheet. Repeat with remaining grape leaves and rice filling.

Place filled grape leaves, seam side down, in bottom of grape-leaf-lined pot, fitting snugly together and layering filled leaves atop one another as needed. Pour enough water over filled grape leaves to cover generously (about 6 cups), then pour 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil over. Place a heavy plate on top of rolled dolmas to weigh them down. Bring liquid to simmer. Cover pot and reduce heat to very low; continue to simmer until rice filling is tender, 45 to 55 minutes.

Let them cool in water to room temperature and then remove from water.
I served mine with Greek Yogurt Dip, but you can just eat them as is!

Quite a few days ago I wandered across the border to Oregon land with Solanah to do some shopping. I must have been channeling the Christmas Spirit as I inadvertently left the house dress in my finest Kris Kringle attire. I hadn’t even noticed my festive attire til it was too late to change, and Solanah said I appeared to be Santa’s scandalous daughter. After I celebrated Christmas in April we headed home to work on our new shared space at the antique mall I work at, Old Glory. If you are a local reader, stop into the shop and see our hard work! I work weekends, and sign autographs HA!

Eat Your Cake

As I write this I am sitting on an airplane heading back from Las Vegas, Nevada. Exciting right? Well that is not what I am writing about this blog post, but never fear a Vegas post is in the works as well.
For now I will leave you with pictures of my darling girl-child’s 3rd birthday. I am so fortunate to have a friend who owns a fantastic bakery in downtown. Local readers do take note, Je T’aime Bakery has some amazing everything, but the cakes… take the cake. (Hold on! Flight attendants are here with in flight cocktails! p.s. I am terrified of flying)
Ok, back to Je T’aime and the delicious 3rd birthday cake extravaganza. Our cake was pink and brown with little red edible flowers.

Margaux was pretty excited to hear the news of it being time for dessert!I look crazy when delivering cake apparently, but isn’t my shirt just the bees knees? Solanah talked me into it when I stopped into her work the other day. It’s a fabulous kitschy 60’s blouse! Very sexy secretary, no?

After cake, the kids had a wonderful time dumping out a box of 2000 popsicle sticks… it’s the simple things in life? I suppose so.

Wow! So what started out as a blog that would feature a 1950s wedding dress I am selling, that I also happened to model in, has molded itself into a blog about wearing a vintage wedding dress.. to of all things, your wedding. In producing this I lost several hours doing "research" a.k.a. oogling other brides via Offbeatbride.com and Rocknrollbride.com to bring you some vintage formal frockery inspiration. (fun tidbit, long time blog readers might know.. I am featured on both sites for two different reasons... *cough* attention wh*re *cough*)

Back to the beginning now... I got this amazing dress for my shop, that was so amazing, that Toma wanted to photograph it for fun and art, or whatever. We layered curtains and I nearly fell over a few times, but we got some good shots. I make a pretty good lookin' spooky bride if I do say so myself...

For some reason I like to ruin the illusions of photoshoots and share all the movie magic. Mostly I just like to show how pretty we can make stuff look with the ghetto-living-room-studio set-up we were working with on this shoot. So, here is a small behind the scene video of our studio/living room. Note the awesome Victorian Settee in the background! I love that thing.

While writing this, I ended up on a tangent of vintage inspired weddings and fantastic brides with stupendous style. So I thought I would share a few ladies, and their vintage gowns on the day of their vow exchange.

Apparently, I am a Signature

Quite recently I was gifted a fabulous item! A belt inspired by my now signature kicks, the Leopard Bordello's. The belt was made by Cassie Stephens, who is on Etsy and Facebook. I was so impressed with the quality of the belt that matched my shoes oh so perfectly. Cassie was so sweet to work with and I think she is unveiling some new designs soon, so I would keep track of her. Plus, she is totally adorable! That's grounds enough for face-book-ery in my opinion.

Last weekend, I slacked off. I didn't go through all the entries to my give-away. I went on a road trip instead. I have not had a weekend off from work in nearly 3 months, so I took full advantage of my consecutive free days and hit the road. We wandered off through out Oregon, and thrifted in every town we came across. We crossed mountains, canyons, and a few high deserts covered in snow.

I acquired a good deal of vintage that's heading into ye olde Etsy Shop this week, and spent some much needed time relaxing and having fun.

Parade Wave

Today, as every year on the 17th of March, was St. Patrick's day. My children attend a preschool that gets the honor of walking in the Paddy Hough Parade every year. Thankfully the sun peaked out for a bit this year and gave us a dry parade path. I had nothing green to wear except some long socks from sock dreams, and my trusty little hat, so that is what I pulled together. That, and a lot of brown.

By the end of the parade, the dark clouds were rolling back in so we called it a day and headed back for home. This evening we are headed to the local Irish pub for some corned beef and cabbage, and live music. I wonder how the kids feel about shepard's pie? Guess we will find out.

Come and Play With Us

Three times a year, a magical thing happens. The Palmer Wirf's Antique Exposition comes to the Portland Expo Center. Every time its a lavish array of vintage and antique finery. The prices, in general are unbeatable, and the selection is second to none. I generally take Solanah along, as she is my best friend, and vintage companion. This season, to make light of the masses who assume we are in fact twin sisters, we decided to sew up matching dresses. We used slightly similar, but different 1940s housedress patterns with matching fabric. The result was amazing, and I am glad we are crazy enough to do such a thing.

I spent a mess ton of money, and left with bags and bags of dress, most of which are listed in my Etsy Shop, with more on the way this week! Solanah loaded up on bakelite, filling her arm by days end. I look forward to July when the next expo comes to town!

Fashionable Thrift Trip

This weekend, after a less than amazing Antique Expo, I decided to head back over the bridge to get some more thrifting done, and hopefully come home with a little but more inventory for my etsy shop.
After stopping for a mimosa down the block, and taking some blog pictures I did have a rather successful shopping adventure. After shopping, we just kind of wandered all over the city, before heading home. And yes, my feet were starting to hurt by the end of the day.

Do you love my latest pair of Bordello's? I hope to have a whole closet of them soon! There are so many colors and styles, I would never need anther pair of shoes again.
My hat is one of my few scores from Expo. $8.00 for a slightly cartoonish teal hat? Yes please!

TuTus and Toddlers

I went to lunch this week with the lovely Solanah and her Aunt Coedith. Betwixt the two of us, (Coedith and I) we have 6 children, so any outing is a tall order. It was fun, we hit the local pub house with a wonderful kids area and had a burger-ish luncheon before we parted ways to preschool, kindergarten, or what have you. I wore a fun 50s skirt, with my crinoline exposed, and my daughter Marguax took part as well in her favorite tutu. The tutu is an important child wardrobe staple, of which one can not leave home without, lest you be privy to full scale temper tantrum!

Monday morning, I shall divulge the details of mine and Solanah's secret sewing project! I am sure you will all love the crazy that happens when we put our minds together. See you then!

1000 Followers, Massive Skee Ball, and A Giveaway

Whoa! I leave for a weekend, and I come back to well over 1000 followers! So hello, hello to all of you. I guess it is good that I have been speaking with Lolita Girl Clothing about sponsoring a give-away for when I hit 1000 followers! I have a few more parties interested in sponsoring as well, so get excited... all will be unveiled in the next few days.

Moving on to the actual blog post du jour. The other night we rounded up the kids and headed down to the bowling alley to win some tickets on the legalized children's gambling machines. $40.00 later, we had about $5.00 in junk that was broken before we got home, but at least the littles had a good time. I on the other hand get extremely over stimulated when flashing lights and bells are going off... so I sipped a beer and watched the kids play. I did however, get down on a serious game of skee ball.

My Bordello's are back and I am wearing the cute brown wool dress Solanah gave me, alas you can't see it very well. But check out that carpet, would you not get over-stimulated in a place like that??

Wonder Woman

Every once in a blue moon I hit the streets in fully modern attire. Not often, but sometimes, I piece together crazy outfits, with anything I have laying around. The other day was one of those times, and it was met with confusion. I was stopped at preschool by someone commenting on how "patriotic" I looked. I smiled and said, hey, I guess I will blog about being Wonder Woman.
After preschool I popped in to the Urban Eccentric to see Solanah at work, and she took a few shots of my red white and blue attire.

I wore plain chuck taylors, and a cute bow from Lucky Cupcake Hairclips. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever grow up, and the answer is... Probably not.
Solanah looked amazing in a great 50s dress with a stellar bronze belt, while my little lady tried on some teal kicks. I was Wonder Woman, Super Girl, Princess America... whatever anyone wants me to be... but I looked cool doing it! HA!

SNOWPOCALYPSE!

One of the great downfalls of living in the low-lands of the Pacific Northwest is the severe lack of snow. I have lived here my entire life, and I can recall three times we had a good old fashioned snow fall. What generally happens, happened today. This morning we woke up to about 2 inches of snow, that was melted off by the lunch hour. We bundled up and headed on a walk to Mon Ami, the local coffee house. While there, Solanah came in, and we spent a cold afternoon together.

I finally got to wear my fur bow hat I picked up for $12 at a thrift two years ago. I was gifted a collar that matched it and it pulled the whole outfit together.
Solanah looked amazing in her mink, throwing snowballs with my little people. Alas, the snow is now gone and we are back to the rain that is so stereotypically Portland. So long sweet snow day, see you next year!

Secret Sewing Society

Solanah and I braved the fabric store last night with two small children in tow, all to gather supplies for our best sewing project yet. I wont go into details yet, but the Palmer Wirf's Antique Exposition is in 2 weeks and we have some interesting outfit plans.

I can say it involves the 1940s, some white buttons, and a whole lot of red floral fabric. I can't wait to share the final project. I stayed up late last night cutting pattern pieces out, in hopes that this weekend we can get to sewing. I might share some progress pictures, but for the whole shebang, you too will have to wait for Expo!

In the Jailhouse Now

This weekend I got to see a very fantabulous production of O Brother Where Art Thou? The
show was put on the by the Space Art Collective of Vancouver, WA and was entirely made up of marionette puppets. The soundtrack was played entirely by a live band in the loft of the building. The whole showing was hilarious, and the actors were quite quick with their improvisational wit.

I am sad to say the show has finished its run, but look forward to the next show they choose to adapt to puppetry.

I forgot all about taking my outfit picture that night, so this is the only image I have of me. Jesse took a picture of me trying not to fall to my death in the loft/catwalk area where the puppeteers did their magic.

I got this short video of the band playing so you can hear how amazing it was. The men and women who performed the soundtrack were truly amazing, and it was a night well spent. Glad I can say I got to see it!

Old Hearts, Destroyed

Ok, I have no hopes in keeping this out of the realm of "rant" so if you are not in the mood to lend an ear to a cranky Twila Jean, carry on and come back tomorrow.
Last year (almost to the day) Solanah and I stumbled upon a stunning piece of history in my own neighborhood. The owners were lovely enough to let us tour around it as it was vacant. Solanah took some lovely pictures and blogged it here. The wall paper was decadent, the floors were the deepest dark you could imagine, the kitchen ceilings reached for the heavens. This house was in shambles, but with the right work, could have been nothing short of perfection.
Today, I accidentally stumbled upon the MLS listing for this house, as it is today, fully remodeled. I can't even begin to describe my rage, and anger, and sadness, and homicidal thoughts. It pains me to see what people will do to a gorgeous piece of history. If you want a NEW house, buy a NEW house. Don't degrade, destroy, and disrespect history and beauty for the sake of a "cool old shell." BUY A NEW HOUSE!
This once gorgeous house, has now been home-depot-ed, ikea-ed, and target-ed to the nines, and is a complete degradation of its original heritage. You can view the full listing here. While I know this only gets the home more views, and thus helps the listing agent and the people who committed such a a heinous act of remodeling, I can't help but scream it anyway. BUY A NEW HOUSE.

Wallpaper gone, and what is this? CARPET on the stairs? I am literally dazed, and thoroughly confused at this. I know its not just me that gets upset by this, and yet you see it all too often. Half of downtown Vancouver, WA now looks like this. Thank you over-zealous house flippers, thank you for destroying history.

Obligatory Holiday Post

Regardless of your stance on the holiday known as the feast of Saint Valentine, you must admit having a good excuse to dress up is always a good time. This years Valentines found me at Team Jessup's house, for a fancy soireé with pink cocktails. Our most favorite multi-dimensional blogging family was entirely present, with Coedith in a fabulous handmade themed circle skirt. Solanah was there too, wearing a full length mink coat that was outrageously pretty. Sloe Gin Fizz got the best of me, and I had to go home early, but the party and the games we played were quite fun!

Is this photo not hilarious? I think it totally reminds me of the picture your mom would snap in the minutes before you are out the door and off to your senior prom.

Our parties are so amazing, and little known fact, we are actually the mob. We even have the bald Italian guy who points his finger a lot.

Drop Dead Red Head

I took the plunge this week and went back to red. I had red hair off and on a bit through high school and after, but this time I went about it in a more professional way. I am excited for how it turned out as it's not too bright or too dull. I think also, it will help my internet persona, as well as shop persona... as the girl with strange red hair? I am not sure exactly, but I am liking it and I have received a great deal of compliments.

I took a walk with my littles today, all around down town. The above pictures were shot by my four year old, who is getting quite handy with a camera I must admit. Soon enough I might have a personal photographer on hand.
I did etsy shots today, and those give a good glimpse into my hair color too, so I figure its worth while to share.

The red I chose matches my living room furniture, which I find comical. The color is by Pravana, and its in their Vivids collection. It's just the plain RED, but it's a stain dye which stays incredibly well. I suggest if you want bright lavish color with staying power you talk to you stylish about Pravana. Hands down it is my favorite quality dye.

I don't know how long I will stay red, or if I will go brighter, but I do know I am enjoying the silliness of pretending to be young forever. On that note I would love to share a very priceless image of me at 18, with bright red hair. My niece is also pictured, and clearly she was a very spooky witch...
